The way to rate a book is the interest there to continue reading and it certainly was, it kept moving at a great pace
kept you guessing to the end.
The book setup a situation and had many twists and turns. I have to say idid guess a bad guy early on but despite that nothing was able to be figured out til the pieces came together at-the end.
Fast moving, with twists, treachery, mayhem intertwined throughout the story. The characters are believable, and so is the dialogue. A tale that will stay with me for a long time. Evil personified in a moving story. An incredibly good read.
This is the first book I’ve read of this series, but I will definitely be reading more by author Matt Brolly. Although there are many references to previous books, I was able to follow the various storylines, so I could read “Dead Embers†as a stand-alone. The writing is polished, the well-paced plot intricate, and the characters interesting. Highly recommended.
Wow, lots going on in this entry in the DCI Lambert series. Explosions, fires, missing police officers, and the "watch your back" vibe throughout will keep the reader entertained to the last pages. Highly recommended for those who like fast-paced Brit police procedurals.
Once again, a well written story with substance. This is a great series and I really like the main characters, their foibles and flaws, friendships and alliances, their difficult personal situations. The story was complex but easy to read and had a great ending. Looking forward to the next one!
Of all the British detective stories, this is one of the least I liked, the writing is jumbled, constantly have to look back to the previous paragraph to see who is talking..and characters are never made to make you feel like you know them, too many characters come in and out.. it is just not comfortable to read..certainly not like the Lynley series!! Just wanted it to end!! Will not be reading another of this series!!
Matt Brolly continues to score with his DCI Lambert books. I dropped "Dead Embers" to a 4-star rating only because it is a bit too much on the gruesome side for my taste.
The writing is still uniquely British and part of the enjoyment in reading British novels is translating phrases into the equivalent American idioms. Another is the odd friendships between Lambert and his colleagues (particularly Chief Inspector Tillman) which add to the intrigue. Lambert is a brilliant investigator with a tortured side stemming from his daughter's tragic death which gives the reader empathy for the character.
